Vintage d’Ocracoke
By Raymond Garrish & Herbert O’Neal
(Reprinted from the 1973 Wokokon, the Ocracoke School Yearbook)

“Wine making is almost a thing of the past on Ocracoke.  Nowadays only a few of the old people make it, although quite a few drink it.  The old timers used to make it in glass jugs, but now plastic trash cans are used.  This type of container absors (sic) heat, holds more, and makes the wine brew better.  Although brewing time varies with each maker’s preference, the average is two weeks or 14 days, whichever comes first.  Cheers...”
